Outstanding Faculty Award:
Dr. Sharon Joy, from the University of Houston , Chair of the Delta Iota chapter membership committee, has been an active member since her initiation in 2001. As a musician, she has used her gift as a tool for intercultural communication. She writes, performs and records uplifting songs inspiring international understanding and cooperation. She is using her knowledge of Hebrew and Arabic to bring Palestinian and Jewish Israeli children together to create an original musical production. She is described by colleagues on the Delta Iota board as "contributing greatly in creative ideas and hard work".
Outstanding Staff, Edward S. Blankenship Award:
Janet Fleming, Past President of the Delta Iota chapter, began her service as a founding member in the position of Student Vice President. She drafted her chapter's mission statement and produced a brochure to raise visibility on campus. She works on campus as a member of the international admissions team and has effectively assisted students from all over the globe with various issues and concerns throughout her University career.
To quote one of her fellow board members: "she has consistently applied her cultural knowledge and sensitivity to promote international scholarship."
Outstanding Domestic Student Award:
Jeremy Allen Oase, theater student at California State University Sacramento, Omicron chapter, has a dream to bring high quality cross-cultural theater to smaller communities. He wants to "promote free speech and artistic expression, breaking down cultural barriers and produce theatre with limited resources." He studied in London for a year and traveled all over Europe . He studied African and Japanese cultures, Spanish language and is applying for a Fulbright grant to do research on theatre in Trinidad where the emerging dramatists are "addressing contemporary social issues such as AIDS, racism, and abuse as well as raising public awareness and interrogating hegemonic social values."
Outstanding International Student, David M. Merchant Award
Angelika Kramer, is a doctoral student at Michigan State University , from Germany . She has been an active member of Alpha Alpha chapter, and was selected to the board. Since 2001 she has tutored elementary, high school and college students in German and taught a conversational English course for spouses of MSU students. She also served as a member of the Community Volunteers for International Speakers Bureau and mentor for a cross-cultural Buddy Program. To quote one of her professors, "Angelika is the best international student we had here at MSU for the last decade".
